Termination of employment is not an easy situation. Can you still land in a good job after being fired from work? How do you move on? These might be really tough questions to answer for you. Applicants oftentimes find it more difficult to look for a job when they were fired from their work. Most of them felt sorry for themselves. Some tried to lock themselves in their house and refuses to go out. There was even one couple in the news that committed suicide and killed their children because they were laid off from work. Some people tend to panic once they are in this type of a situation. While others remained calm. But what can we do to cope with this problem?

We need to understand first the difference between being laid-off and fired from work. Lay-off is the term used by the company when they need to reduce their workforce for some legal reasons in order for the business to survive. In some countries, this is also known as retrenchment. When a company is going to lay-off an employee, they will give you a written prior notice that is usually 60 days in the U.S. employment laws depending on your case. Other countries allow a 30 days written prior notice. The employee is also entitled to a severance pay depending on the length of service. Cases of lay-off are much easier to handle when you are looking for a new job. Prospective employers may already understand the situation.

On the otherhand, it may be more difficult to handle when you are being fired from work. It is also known as termination of employment at the discretion of the employer. Some reasons for firing an employee are non-performance of the job, insubordination, mishandling of funds, delinquent absenteeism, and a lot more. Perhaps, we can discuss the termination policy required by law in our future articles.

If such situation happens to you, here are some things that you can do to help you in your job search after being fired from work.

1. MANAGE YOUR EMOTIONS

A person needs to be able to control his/ her emotions before he/ she can move on. You might possibly undergo four stages after being fired from work.

  1. Denial Stage - A person being fired by his/ her employer tends to deny the situation. He/ she refused to accept any fault at his/ her end.
  2. Anger Stage - This is the stage that the employee felt some resentment towards his/ her former employer. The feeling of rage and revenge tends to rev up to the mind of the person. Not unless this is controlled, the person will find it hard to look for another job.
  3. Depression Stage – This is the stage when the person already feels hopeless about his/ her case. He/ she felt that nothing can be done anymore. The level of self-confidence already went down. The person needs to open up to his/ her partner or family for support. He/ she needs to express his/ her feelings to them in order to help him/ her manage his/ her emotions.
  4. Acceptance Stage – This is the stage that the person enables himself to evaluate the situation. He/ she now acknowledges what had happened and come to a realization that it is not yet the end of the world for him/ her. He/ she now learns to recognize that there is still hope. . . a better future still lies ahead of him/ her.

2. BE HUMBLE AND PRAY FOR GUIDANCE

It is not an easy situation when you are being terminated from work. You put too much pressure on yourself. It adds up to all the stress that you are experiencing in life. However, you need to pray for God’s guidance. In Luke 11:9 says, “Ask and it shall be given unto you.” It is always good to be humble and accept whatever mistakes you have committed at work. Do ask for forgiveness, too. Indeed, humility goes a long way. As the saying goes, “God uses our difficulties to develop our character.” Being fired from work, whether it is a rightful or wrongful termination, happens for a reason. You have to learn from your experience.

I have a friend who was terminated from work early this year because of some differences with her boss. She has been working with the company for two years. She made amendments with her employer. Actually, she was stressed out considering that the unemployment rate was rising. She was already 55 years old at that time. She feared that she won’t be accepted anymore because of her age. She was worried about her bills to pay. But she prayed and put her trust in God. She never lost hope. She worked hard in looking for another job. She was able to find a new employer after two months. She now works in one of the largest banks. Her present position fits her better than her last company based on her experience. She is now being recognized as the best employee of their branch. She is happy and thankful, too. The things that happened to her made her a better and stronger person. Indeed, prayer works for good.

As the saying goes, God uses our difficulties to develop our character.
As the saying goes, God uses our difficulties to develop our character.

3. DO NOT BAD MOUTH YOUR FORMER EMPLOYER

Usually, the first reaction of the employee being fired from work is to tell everybody about his/ her case. This is the most common mistake a former employee can do because it can affect him/ her. It would make it more difficult to look for another work.

Stop telling everybody you meet that you were terminated from work. Your immediate family is already enough to help and give you moral support. Just remember that your prospective employer will also do a background check. It would not be wise if they find it out through rumors. Your prospective employer can give you the benefit of the doubt even if you were terminated from work if you didn’t say anything negative about your previous company. Bad mouthing your previous company can implicate fear to your prospective employer. It is not good for your job search.

4. REGAIN YOUR SELF-CONFIDENCE

Being fired from work can affect the self-confidence of a person. You begin to feel helpless and sometimes worthless. How you see yourself before starts to change. You become moody, irritable and impatient. There are those who shy away from people. However, you should be able to regain your self-confidence and self-esteem in order to help you in your job search. Learn to differentiate self-confidence from bragging. Do not brag.

How can you regain your confidence? Try to make a list of the things that you can do and cannot do. Focus more on those things that you can do and within your control. Use these to your advantage when you apply for work. Do not highlight those that are uncontrollable. You will just feel disappointed. Any prospective employer would like to hire somebody who has confidence in himself. Somebody who knows what he/ she can do for their company. They are more interested on somebody who knows his/ her strengths and weaknesses.

Just remember that it is not the times that we falter and fall that matters, but it is the times that we stand from each fall.

5. UPDATE YOUR RESUME

A resume is also known as a bio-data, which is a short term for biography data. Every year you have to update your resume because of some possible changes in your work experiences, accomplishments or educational attainment. This is an important thing that you should do before you begin to apply for work. This is the information that your prospective employer will laid their eyes on before you can be scheduled for an interview. Be sure that this is simple, concise and complete. Try to search for new resume format. Do not be contented with your traditional style of writing. Ensure that you do not express any emotions through your resume. Do not include your story of termination from work. This should be more informative and factual about your qualifications.

6. START LEARNING YOUR WAY IN JOB SEARCHING

If you haven’t applied for work for a long time, then start learning your way in job searching. You may check out my articles on “Finding the Right Job” for a detailed guidelines. Tell your family and friends that you are actively looking for work. You don’t need to tell them about your termination case. Just asks them for some referrals. You may also read my hubs on “How to Handle a Job Interview” and “Job Rejection: Reasons from an HR Point of View” for additional insights. You will get busy and pre-occupied once you start your job search. Stay focus and do not dwindle on your bad experience.

7. BE SINCERE IN YOUR JOB SEARCH

You should always be truthful when you do your job search. We have one former employee who was terminated from work because of dishonesty and mishandling of funds. He applied for another company but he did not told them about his case. He got accepted. However, their company had an event and one of our Executive Vice-President saw him. Our EVP, without any malicious intent, mentioned to the owner that the male staff was our former employee who was terminated from work. They eventually discussed his case. That male staff was again fired from work due to dishonesty in his application. Is this legal? Yes, it is. You may check it in the application form that you signed and submitted to your prospective employers.

So, how should you respond when you are being asked why you left your previous work? You can tell your reason briefly. Be calm and objective about your case. Do not blame anybody for what happened to you. You may end your explanation on a positive statement by emphasizing more on your main accomplishments and what the experience has taught you. For instance, you may say that “I was terminated from work due to mishandling of funds. But I was previously awarded as the Best Teller for 2nd Quarter of 2008. I learned much from this experience. I have to be extra careful in handling funds to avoid shortages and overages.”

These things are tips to make it easier for you to look for another job. However, you still have to work hard and do better in your job search. You will definitely land in a good job if you have that determination and commitment within you. Tell yourself that "I will get hired and I am going to start working to achieve it.” Go out your way now and be the first one to fill that open position!

Social networking is important. It will also help somebody find a job. However, a person needs the knowledge, skills, abilities, and education required for the job in order to get hired and perform at his best in his work.

Bad mouthing as you stated,is as serious offence. During the interview a single word that goes against the former employer can reduce the chances of selection to about 40%.This is an attribute which no employer wants to find in their future employees.

Excellent TinaV. Stumbled upon your hub gathering info for a friend who unfortunately has not reached the acceptance stage. Sometimes people need real counseling beyond family. Getting them there sometimes takes some "tough love". Even then we are often left with only our prayers.

Hi Harris, social networking is important. It will also help somebody find a job. You may also get hired through referrals, but you will end as a liability if you don't have the right skills.

As I have previously mentioned, a person needs the knowledge, skills, abilities, and education required for the job in order to get hired and perform at his best in his work.

A sincere and successful job search always requires a powerful resume and lot of patience. It also requires a good job search engine and the knack of tracking good jobs and good positions.

Hi toddwertz,

I agree with you; I hope this article will inspire those who are experiencing this situation in their life. With the global economic crisis nowadays, there are a lot of people being laid off and terminated from their work. I encourage them to move on because it is not yet the end of the world. There’s always second chance for those who might have committed a mistake. Hope is within your reach; you only have to hold on to it.

I really appreciate your comment. Have a great week!

thank you for this article. I was fired for mishandling funds & have been hiding in my house for almost 2 yrs. I have been through all 4 stages & have recently tried to find a job however feel it is a lost cause as I don't have a reference. Now looking at my kids I feel hurt as my stupidity & greed has lead to my kids going from a comfortable life to almost poverty (yes we have had our power disconnected a couple of times & days with absolutely nothing in our fridge or cupboards. I found out my son was txtn friends to bring leftover dinner to school for him). I have no support from family as I am too ashamed tell them & they think I am just being lazy as I was senior staff and highly qualified so should find a job easily.

Just remember, everybody makes mistakes and learn from it; but everybody also deserves a second chance. Just pray and stay strong; do your best and put your hope in God. Have a blessed Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Thanks Tina. I believe in prayer. I have a supervisor who is out to get me. I've been at my job 23 years, and was disiplined for the first time last month. I made another innocent mistake that may get me into trouble. Please pray for me. The enemy is at work, but he will not succeed!

Joey,

Everything in life happens for a reason. As reflected in Proverbs 3:5 - 6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." We may not understand the reason, but we only have to trust Him. I will certainly include you in my prayers. God bless you and your family.

I need advice please. 3 months ago

Dear Julie,

I have recently been applying in the banking industry but I have one problem, I was terminated. I was terminated by trying to help someone out and it ended up biting me back in the you know what really hard. Anyways, what happened was that by trying to help out a costumer with money (because she didn’t have enough) instead of giving them a discount I took a dollar off, in doing so I charged the wrong amount (I don’t know where my head was that day). One thing lead to the next I got really nervous because at the employer I worked at you could get in trouble for being over or under a certain amount of money if your register wasn’t balanced. I ended up taking to money I thought that was going to make me register over. I am not the kind of person who would EVER use that for my personal use. I couldn’t sleep that night, I was even thinking of ways to pretend I found it somewhere my job and put it back in the register. The very next day I went to my boss and gave him the money I took and the recent and explained what happened. He knew I was a very good employee even though knowing me for a short amount of time and even though he didn’t want to terminate me corporate did. Now, when I apply online to jobs I say I left and if they ask me personally if I was terminated I tell them the truth but if they don’t I stay quiet. I feel bad for doing so but it was a mistake and I learned from it, I mean I lost my favorite job. I have had another job and been on register (they didn’t know what happened) and I never did anything like that again and my register was always perfect. Anyhow, now I am applying to different banks and even though one of them didn’t ask me directly if I was fired and I didn’t tell them I am still scared they might find out in a background check. Is this possible? And should I continue filling out applications the way I have? Can I get in even more trouble for my past troubles? Thank you.

Dear “I need advice please”,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I know that you were not the only who realized something from it, but I’m sure other readers also learned from it. I understand your situation, and it is really hard to find work after being terminated for an unintentional act. However, everybody deserves a second chance; so cheer up!

Here are some suggestions that you might want to consider in your job search:

1. Banks are really careful about hiring candidates with cases of mishandled accounts because of the nature of their business. I suggest you try to apply for a position that doesn’t handle money. If you want to continue working with a bank, try to check back office support jobs such as the Administrative Assistant, Loan Personnel or Personal Banker.

2. Check if you can use your immediate boss as one of your character references. Ask if your boss can give a fair feedback about your performance in case of any background check from your prospective employers. In this way, it will help you justify the termination that it was really unintentional and you were the one who even informed him/ her about it. Prospective employers will always inform the candidates if they will do a background check.

3. It is just right that you tell your prospective employers the truth in case they ask about it during your job interview. Being truthful with your situation will free you from any worries. However, you can answer it as brief as possible, and you don’t have an obligation to elaborate it too much. For instance you may say, “I regret I was terminated from work due to mishandling of accounts. I was a consistent top performer in our branch, but unfortunately, I made an unintentional mistake. That incident made me realized the importance of being accurate and detail-oriented with my work at all times.”

4. When you fill-up an application online, you don’t need to indicate you were terminated because it will hinder you for getting a possible job interview. Just inform your prospective employers during your interview if they will ask about it. This is the time you will have the opportunity to sell yourself to them.

5. As for your present employer, you don’t have an obligation to tell them IF they didn’t ask you anything about your reason for leaving your last employer. However, if you gave them a different reason when they interviewed you then they will have the right to terminate you in case they’ll find out about it. I suggest you continue to perform your best at work and try to find the right timing to inform your boss about it. But you must be prepared for whatever their decision will be.

6. I want to share this principle with you - “We cannot correct one mistake by doing another mistake. We learn from the past, face the present and plan for the future.” You will not get into even more trouble because of your past troubles IF you will not commit the same mistake or cover up for it. It is still wise to face whatever consequences of your actions.

7. Just remember this – pray, recognize your failures and ask for forgiveness. Thank God for all the good times and bad times in your life. Ask for guidance and wisdom from Him. Just continue your job search and still perform well at your present work, but don’t forget to put your hope and trust that He will do the rest because He makes all things beautiful in His own time.

Cheer up and God bless you!

Hello Tina, recently I got terminated at work because of misconduct. There is a policy that we can't make changes to co-workers account but I didn't know the policy. Actually a few people got terminate and some got suspenede from work. I had gone through the 4 stages you mention in a week. Now I am at the situation gaining back my confidence and looking for new job. What concerns me is that I am not sure if I have to tell the truth about reason leave the company. Also, I can't provide a reference for the job. What should I do??

TINA V profile image

TINA V Hub Author 4 weeks ago

Hi Tammy,

I'm sorry to hear what happened to your work, but thank you for sharing your story. There are few questions that you need to answer because this information will help you in your job interview.

1. What was your employment status with your last company?

2. How was your relationship with your immediate supervisor/ manager? Do you think you can make him as your personal reference? If not, can you discuss with your former HR your problem with your job search?

3. Is this your first job or do you have any previous work before this company? If this is your first job, can you ask you former professors or teachers to be your character reference? But if you were able to work with other companies even during your internship, can you make your other previous employers as your references?

You will have a clearer picture of how you will approach your job interview with these questions. If you notice in #7, I cited an example on how to answer this toughest question in an interview. Please be reminded that you always have to be honest with your response. Just acknowledge your misconduct, tell them what you have learned from that situation and what you can do to prevent committing the same mistakes.

I hope this helps you. Good luck in your job search!
